Learn the fundamentals of making beautiful wooden pens as you also learn the safe use of a lathe to make small wooden objects using carbide turning tools.

The instructor will discuss the basic concepts of turning, using the modern pen as a model. You will use the drill press to prepare your turning blanks. Then, depending on the experience level of students in the class, the instructor will work out a schedule so that each student gets sufficient lathe time and one-on-one attention to complete a pen.

  • Open to ages 14+. Beginners are welcome.
  • After completing this class, you will be qualified to turn pens during Open Studio time, provided you have also taken our free Orientation to the Woodshop class.

Instructor: Oscar Barbo has been a woodworker and turner for more than 30 years. Oscar is well-traveled, learning his turning in Hawaii, where he relished making pens from the local Koa wood. He often uses rare woods and non-wood materials like bone and antler. He is looking to share his skills while promoting pen design.
