Registration is closed**This workshop will be conducted via live streaming with Zoom.**

In this 3-hour workshop (2 1.5-hour sessions), you will learn the basic italic (cursive) letterforms and you’ll be introduced to elegant edged-pen calligraphy. You will learn about calligraphy tools, tips and techniques and you’ll receive a list of resources for further study. You can also use these tools as a basis for improving your everyday handwriting.

Important supplies you will need to have on hand:

  • Fine Sharpie non-bleed black pen OR black Micron Pigma pen, 3.0
  • Pilot Parallel Pen, size 2.4 (yellow/orange cap)
  • Paper (2 types: Pad of Canson Marker paper and Xerox Professional Quality Bond paper, available on Amazon or at Office Depot)


  • Registration will close 10/8 at 12:30 PM. Packets will be mailed out to students on 10/9. Please verify your mailing address when you register.
  • This class will be taught via the Zoom video conferencing program. For a great video on how to use Zoom, watch this tutorial.
  • A link to join this online event will be sent to the email your registered with. Please watch for this email.
  • In gratitude to our members for their continued support during the closures, BARN is offering all classes for free to BARN members through December 2020.  Members are still responsible for paying materials and mailing fees, where applicable. Instructor Bio:

Sally Penley is a fine artist and professional calligrapher living in Olympia. In addition to her love of letters and mixed-media painting, Sally enjoys many forms of bookmaking and creating Asian-inspired

images with Sumi ink and simple makeshift tools on a variety of textures and surfaces. Sally holds a BFA in Visual Communications. Before her “day job” retirement, she was director of communications at Weyerhaeuser Company in Federal Way. Sally manages the Loft Gallery at Buck’s 5th Avenue in Downtown Olympia, where she also has a studio and teaches art and calligraphy classes.
