This class has been canceled.

For youth ages 14 - 18
(Four session class: Monday through Thursday)

This workshop is both an introduction to artists’ books that address issues of social change and personal narrative, and also an opportunity to make an artist book that safely expresses those ideas, beliefs, and feelings. This class is specifically designed for you, the teen who is looking for a way to safely express issues relevant to your world.

From school shootings to college application pressure to social encounters, teens often hold very impassioned viewpoints about contemporary issues that can be distilled into meaningful artist books. Starting with simple writing exercises, we’ll explore the issues and experiences that are meaningful to you, and then we’ll work individually to create a book that expresses those concerns, emotions, and experiences. You’ll work on a simple binding structure while learning about how words and images can work together to tell a story.  A variety of mark-making tools will be supplied for creating images and text.

Important Notes:

  • Please bring this permission slip to the first day of class.
  • Minimal financial assistance available. Please apply here.
  • If you would like BARN to know any specific information about your child's allergies or learning needs, please email Julie Leung: [email protected]

Instructor: MJ Linford is a Book Artist with over 40 years of experience working with books and students. Her work can be seen in the book arts room at BIMA, as well as online on YouTube
