    **This workshop will be conducted via live streaming with Zoom.**

    In these 6 class sessions, students will learn to make and set standard and thick walled bezels for setting oval and round cabochon cut stones. This class will also cover tube setting and 4-prong setting of faceted stones. Factors that effect each style of setting are discussed. This class is an excellent in-depth exploration of stone-setting technique.

    Tool List: Students should have these personal tools on hand.

    • Burnisher: version with slightly curved tip.
    • Beeswax or Microcrystalline wax: a soft, sticky wax for mixing charcoal dust to make stone pick-up tool.
    • Point burnisher: broken burr held in a Pin Vice handle.
    • Needle file set: including Flat, triangular, barrette.
    • 1 Flat pillar hand file
    • 1 each 600-800 grit sanding sticks
    • Split mandrels with sandpaper strips for use with a Flex shaft
    • Ten power loupe  (10X)

    Instructor Bio:

    Professor Emeritus, Charles Lewton-Brain, is a master goldsmith, author, and artist. He invented Foldforming, internationally recognized as the first new metalsmithing technique in over 200 years. He co-founded the worlds largest, free, internet-based educational resource for jewelers known as Ganoksin. Over 1000 pages of his research on metalsmithing and jewelry making are in the archives on Ganoksin. His work has been internationally exhibited since the 1980s. He received Canada’s highest honor for fine craft, the Governor General Award, in 2012.

    In this 3 session (in-studio) youth class designed for students ages 12 -16, students will learn through instructor demonstration and guided hands-on practice exercises on how to: make a symbol stamped pendant necklace, a pair of disc cut metal hanging earrings and a beaded ornament. Students will get to take home each of their projects wrapped and ready to gift.  

    Details:

    • Maker Mondays are for students ages 12-16.
    • When you register your youth, please enter their name in the Youth's Name field and enter the parent/guardian email address for "registrants email". All reminders and important information will go to the email address you register with.

    Instructor Bio:

    Sarah Jones is a BARN founding member, jewelry studio programming and steering committee member. She is a local Bainbridge Island artist, and teacher with experience in fine metal arts, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, stained glass, and photography. 

    Because Sarah is a visual and tactile learner herself, her classes typically involve a lot of hands-on learning time. In addition, Sarah’s classes are accompanied by printed information and resources for her students to refer back to when practicing their new skills. 

    Sarah’s art has been displayed in the Seattle Metals Guild exhibitions and Bainbridge Arts & Craft exhibitions.

    This two session class will introduce you to the art of stone cutting. Learn how to cut and polish cabochons from rough, using various cutting and polishing equipment in the process. All base materials will be provided. Students are welcome to bring any stones of their own that they have questions about or want to try cutting.

    Completion of this Intro class gains you access to open studio time to use the lapidary equipment. This Intro class is also the prerequisite for all intermediate lapidary classes. 

    Details:

    • Level: Beginner and beyond. No jewelry experience needed for this class. 
    • $25 materials fee is included in the tuition.
    • We will take one 15-30 minute break if you want to bring food/ snacks. BARN has a refrigerator to store your lunch, located on the lower level.

With an art degree in encaustics, painting and metal sculpture, Karin has studied under acclaimed jewelry masters Michael Boyd, Kent Raible, Petra Class, and Sarah Graham and achieved Graduate Jeweler status under Alan Revere of the world renowned Revere Academy of San Francisco, California.  Karin is also a GIA certified Graduate Gemologist and holds a Jewelers of America Bench Jeweler Technician certificate.

    This class is all about using the camera in your smart-phone to photograph objects in metal or glass. Get more information on:

    • How-to capture natural light, augment natural light with additional lighting, and fill cards.
    • How-to tips on minimizing shadows on metal gemstones and glass. 
    • How-to use the photo editing software on your phones.

    The instructor will set up a sample “photo shoot” for several items, and show how adjustments can be made to achieve the final photo. Students will get a chance to take photos followed by discussion of ways to resolve difficulties.


    • This class is located in BARN's Great Room on the upper floor.

    Interested in accessing the Jewelry Studio Makers Space at BARN? Then this session is designed for you! 

    This orientation/ skills assessment is required for all who wish to work in the Jewelry Studio during open studio times and already has some previous experience making jewelry

    Participants will be asked to demonstrate basic tool use you are familiar with. At the end of your assessment, you will be issued a skills card noting what tools and equipment you are able use based on what you have demonstrated proficiency with during this assessment. 

    For BARN Guests and Members, successful completion of this short session will be allowed access to the Jewelry Studio for working independently on projects of your choosing during monitored Open Studio hours only. Please note that the general open studios times are free to Members. For guests/non-members there will be a $20 drop-in fee (please bring cash or check made out to BARN) to use Open Studio.     • Please note that brief interruptions during your assessment may happen as it is Open Studio time also and the monitor needs to be available / have awareness of safety.
    • Safety! Please wear close-toed shoes, avoid loose clothing, tie long hair back, and refrain from wearing dangling jewelry so it doesn’t injure you or get damaged.  Noisy equipment may warrant wearing hearing protection.  Safety glasses and/or a dust mask (which can be found in the studio) must be worn when using specific equipment, please partner with the studio monitor for specifics.

    This three hour class will give you a taste of how fun and easy enameling can be! We will use copper cut outs to create a mandala that can be hung as a wall hanging or an outdoor mobile.

    Teens, come on down to BARN for an evening of games, friends, music, and creativity!  You'll get to choose from activities like cooking, woodworking, sewing, jewelry-making, metal-working, and more - every month is a different lineup. You can also just hang out and chill or work on your own projects.  Bring a friend or come on your own and meet new friends!  

    This month our event is winter themed, with projects you can make to give as gifts this holiday season!  It will be based indoors, so all participants will be required to be vaccinated per our current covid safety protocols.  All will be required to wear masks throughout the evening, except while eating at a distance from others... did we mention free pizza is provided?!!  You bet it is.  

    No registration is required, but teens will be asked to sign in and out and provide a parent phone number and email address upon arrival.  

    Activities this month will include cookie decorating, wood carving, welding, needle felting, laser cut ornaments, stamped copper rings, and more!  We'll also have a holiday movie going (with popcorn, of course.) 

    Read on for descriptions of the various workshops:

    Stamped Rings:  Make a customized stamped copper or brass adjustable ring. Learn how to file and sand metal and use symbol or letter metal stamps to make your ring unique.

    Needle felting: Use colorful wool and a special needle to create a felted snowman or tree ornament, or another creation you dream up!

    Poetry & Art for LGBTQ+ and Allies: Open to all, gay or straight, this safe space lets you play with words and visuals to express your identity. Create hand-bound mini poetry chapbooks to gift your loved ones for the holidays.

    Laser Cut Ornaments: Learn how to use one of BARN's laser cutters in our Electronic & Technical Arts studio to create a wood ornament to take home. 

    Welding:  Learn to use BARN's plasma cutter and other tools in our Welding Shop to make an artistic, one-of-a-kind gift out of steel.

    Learn how to make festive ornaments with colorful enamels! This three hour class will give you a taste of how fun and easy enameling can be! Using copper sheet we will make holiday inspired double sided ornaments.

    The tradition of "Ringing in the New Year" will take on a whole new meaning when learning how to make these beautiful little sparkly rings. Simple beading techniques will be used to weave together a variety of seed beads and crystals to create these tiny masterpieces. Kits will include enough materials to make a number of treasures . . . keep one and gift the others. A lovely and artsy way to ring in a brand new year!

    Instructor: Chris Eisenberg discovered beading while recovering from an accident and the resulting traumatic brain injury. Beading was her therapy and credits it for helping her become whole again. Chris has a doctorate in classical piano performance from the University of Northern Colorado and is a performance coach and collaborator at Central Washington University. She has previously taught workshops at the Autumn Artist Retreat and in the Iron Mountain Arts studio near Port Gamble.

    In this 2 session (3 hours each) class, students will learn how to do gravity pour casting (no centrifugal casting machine required). We will discover the importance of spruces and vents. Learn to avoid undercuts in sand casting and compensate for the various shrinkages in metals. These processes are suitable for making small objects, such as charms, pendants, rings or components of larger pieces. We will be casting two items out of bronze. Students can provide their own metal if they wish to use a different metal.

    • Previous torch use is preferred or recommended.

    This 3 session (in-studio) youth class is designed for students ages 10-12. Students will learn through instructor demonstration and guided hands-on practice how to: make a disc cut symbol stamped pendant necklace, a memory wire bead bracelet and a variety of wire rings. Students will get to take home their projects. All the tools and materials will be provided for use during the classes. 

    Details:

    • This class is for students ages 10-12. Class dates are January 10, 24 & 31. 
    • Registration will close on Friday, 01/07.
    • When you register your youth, please enter their name in the Youth's Name field and enter the parent/guardian email address for "registrants email". All reminders and important information will go to the email address you register with.

    Instructor Bio:

    Sarah Jones is a BARN founding member, jewelry studio programming and steering committee member. She is a local Bainbridge Island artist, and teacher with experience in fine metal arts, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, stained glass, and photography. 

    Because Sarah is a visual and tactile learner herself, her classes typically involve a lot of hands-on learning time. In addition, Sarah’s classes are accompanied by printed information and resources for her students to refer back to when practicing their new skills. 

    Sarah’s art has been displayed in the Seattle Metals Guild exhibitions and Bainbridge Arts & Craft exhibitions.

    Add dynamic color to your jewelry with enamel! This two session class will introduce you to the vast world of enameling. 

    Topics to be covered include: 

    Torch and kiln firing, painting and sifting techniques, metal preparation, and several enameling techniques. All base materials will be provided.

    Completion of this Intro class gains you access to focused open studio for enameling and use of the enameling equipment. Open studio time for enameling is separate from general use open studio due to the sensitivity of the materials being used. 

    You may also be interested in signing up for the next class in this series to further your skills: Enameling Series: Going Further with New Techniques that begins on Friday, January 28th.

    • No jewelry experience needed for this class. This class fulfills the prerequisite for other enameling classes we have on the schedule.

    High schoolers, come on down to BARN for an evening of games, friends, music, and creativity!  You're not going to want to miss it. You'll get to choose from activities like cooking, woodworking, sewing, jewelry-making, metal-working, and more - every month is a different lineup. You can also just hang out and chill or work on your own projects.  

    This fall, our Teen Nights will be based outdoors, with some activities taking place under our large canopies and some small group activities happening inside our facility.  All participants will be required to wear masks and only students who are fully vaccinated will be permitted in the building.  

    No registration is required, but teens will be asked to sign in and out and provide a parent phone number and email address upon arrival.  

    Bring a friend or come on your own and meet new friends.

    • No pre-registration is required for the in-person event, although all students will need to sign in upon arrival.

    This two session class will introduce you to the art of stone cutting. Learn how to cut and polish cabochons from rough, using various cutting and polishing equipment in the process. All base materials will be provided.     In order to maintain social distancing in the studio, there are 3 spots available for general studio use and 3 spots available for using the lapidary equipment. You will specify which type when you register. If you sign up to use the lapidary equipment, please bring your own towels for use and clean up. If the session fills, please join the waitlist. If someone cancels, you will be notified via email that a spot has opened up.
